The short answer is, Yes! Dermal fillers are very safe if it is injected by an experienced medical practitioner, using a high quality product and complications are rare. However…. Due to the UK currently having minimal regulation surrounding dermal fillers, aesthetic medicine & practitioners, it can be more dangerous to have dermal filler in the UK. You must do your research when choosing a practitioner for treatment. Dermal filler is classed as a medical device (must have a CE mark), but in the UK they do not currently require a prescription. This means ANYONE can buy them, and ANYONE can inject them Terrifying! There are no restrictions on who can become a ‘training school’ and ‘train’ in Dermal Fillers. Some of these courses are 1 day long courses and often not taught by qualified providers or medical professionals. They do not have the detailed understanding of facial anatomy and how to avoid & manage complications. A non-medical practitioner may assume their client could ‘just’ contact their GP or attend the local ED department to access the help they require in an aesthetic emergency i.e a vascular occlusion. However, the majority of non-aesthetic specialist NHS doctors are not aware of how to treat specific aesthetic complications, as they have not had the specialist training. Therefore, It is important to choose a medical professional to place your dermal filler who has a detailed understanding of facial anatomy and are also competent at treating any complication.
What if a complication occurs? It is important to check your practitioners qualifications & ask plenty of questions before you agree to any treatment The majority of dermal fillers contain Hyaluronic acid. This means if you do not like the results, have been over treated, filler migration or experience a complication, it is possible to reverse the treatment by injecting the filler areas with Hyalase, which is an enzyme that dissolves the filler. If you have any concerns after your treatment, you should contact your practitioner straight away for assessment. How to find the right practitioner?
Check their qualifications
Ensure they are medically qualified - I.e Doctor, Nurse, Dentist or Surgeon.
During the consultation enquire about their aftercare, and how they manage any problems which may occur
They should advise you on what the treatment entails, how long your results should last, and whether there will be any bruising, swelling or downtime post-treatment.
